Background

Tess was born the illegitimate daughter of Polgha Breyrdche, a prominent seamstress, and Belnys Eldemore, a wandering elven firemage. Indeed, she was a mistake that never was supposed to happen, and tarnished her mother's name as a respectable and gifted seamstress. As word spread throughout the trade routes of her birth, her father came back to Tairad to see if the rumors were true. Being a good man at heart, he settled down there to take care of and raise Tess, amid the harsh glares of the rest of the town. The townsfolk never really seemed to forgive Tess for defaming her mother, and eventually turned their back on the family altogether.

Childhood was a bit of a rough ride for Tess. The townsfolk' anger towards the family carried onto their kin, and combined with the small town communities' mild xenophobia, Tess found herself with few friends and in many fights. Just as well, her slow maturation compared to the rest of the children did lend her to a more tomboyish style. The most girlish thing that she had taken up was sewing, and only because both her parents insisted. That is not to say that she never learned of proper manners and etiquette, culture and history; her father had plenty knowledge of those subjects he never ceased to deliver. She simply didn't care for subtlety or art.

A few things happened in Tess' middle teens to change that opinion. First there was the matter of her friendship with Rorelm, seemingly the only child that didn't tease Tess about her ears or otherwise ostracize her. He was an average, slightly bookish boy the same age as her, and they had been friends since they were 8, much to his parents' dismay. As they grew up together as outcasts, her feelings towards him went beyond just friendship. However, fear prevented her from confessing her feelings about him, and at the age of 17, he left to attend the Lyceum to develop his latent powers, vowing to keep in touch with her. Although the steady river of letters, sent by caravan, began as flood, they slowed down to a trickle over time, as both Rorelm and Tess had engrossed themselves in their studies.

Then, on a late quiet summer night, a bandit raiding party assaulted the town. The town guard was quickly outflanked, and the citizens' militia was called upon. Belnys, disregarding how the townsfolk treated him, quickly rushed to Tairad's defense, with strict instructions to his daughter to stay safe with her mother. After restlessly pacing in the house Tess snuck out and arrived on the battlefield that was the town square about half an hour later to find the scholars that had stayed the night locked in combat with the bandits, and more than holding their own. These strangers had decimated the raiders, and spent the rest of the night helping to tend to the wounded, including Tess' father.

The next day was spent assessing the destruction. There was significant damage to some of the buildings on the outskirts, and the guard had been all but annihilated, but thanks to the Monks of the Desert Wind, as they identified themselves, loss of life had been minimal. They agreed, much to Tess' joy, to stay until the town had managed to rebuild themselves, as they felt partially responsible for the bandit raid. In the following years, she studied rigorously under them. They comforted her when her mother succumbed to illness, and her father, seeing Tess in good care and able to fend for herself, left.

After the town had been almost completely restored, and able to defend itself, the monks decided to resume their journeys, but informed Tess that for further information, she should make her way to Nozama City, where she could continue on the path to the Sublime Way. With nothing left behind her, Tessaera gathered what little cherished belongings she had, letters and scriptures mostly, and left with the next caravan to Nozama City.
